Culture enthusiasts can begin marking their calendars, as the annual Le French Festival is back! Widen your French culture knowledge with these interesting movie selections: 

1. Into the Forest (Dans la forêt)




Two brothers are visiting their divorced father in Sweden during
their summer holidays. He takes them to his country house, deep in
the forest. Though the children are enthusiastic at first, they soon
grow ill-at-ease for as time passes, the forest becomes increasingly
terrifying, and so does their father’s behaviour. Jérémie Elkaïm
(Declaration of War) radiates with strangeness in this film halfway
between Twin Peaks and The Shining.

2. A kid (Le fils de Jean)



Mathieu grew up not knowing who his father was until one day, a phone
call informs him of the latter’s identity and recent death in Canada.
Learning that he has two brothers as well, Mathieu goes to the
funeral in Montreal. Unfortunately, it appears he is not welcome
there… Philippe Lioret -director of Don’t Worry, I’m Fine and
Welcome- is back with a film which accurate tone earned it two
audience awards in North America.

3. Step by Step (Patients)



Following a serious accident, Ben’s life is turned upside down.
Dressing or showering has become a daily struggle. Together with his
new friends, also disabled, Ben will gradually learn how to cope and
live again. Based on French slam poet Grand Corps Malade’s
autobiographical novel, Patients is the story of a rebirth, a chaotic
journey made up of victories and defeats, tears and laughter, but
above all, of encounters.

4. Rock’n Roll



Wealthy, famous and married to Marion Cotillard, 40-something actor
Guillaume Canet has every reason to be happy. But on his next
shooting, his young female counterpart points out he has gone from
hot to not-so-cool-anymore, pushing Guillaume to do whatever it takes
to “rock” again… Featuring a line-up of French stars’ cameos
including Johnny Hallyday, this is a raucous satire from one French
celebrity who isn’t afraid of making fun of himself.

5. The Workshop (L’Atelier)



A young man trying to find a job, Antoine joins a writing workshop
led by famous author Olivia. As Antoine’s anger surface through the
exercises, he starts confronting the group and the novelist, who is
both alarmed and captivated by his violence. After The Class (2008
Palme d’Or in Cannes), Laurent Cantet goes back to social issues
focusing on a young generation trying to find its place in nowadays
France.

6. Corniche Kennedy (Corniche Kennedy)



Underprivileged teens often go to the dangerous Kennedy corniche to
impress their friends with their cliff diving. A wealthy girl living
nearby, Suzanne often watches them, hoping to join the fun. Jumping
for the first time, Suzanne comes to like the discharge of adrenaline
and asks for more. With the sunny Mediterranean coast of Marseille in
the background, this film touches on teenage-years issues.

7. Ceasefire (Cessez-le-feu)



A former soldier of the First World War, Georges tries to escape his
past. But between his brother who the war made deaf and mute and his
travel to West Africa with a fellow veteran, his quest seems
treacherous… Carried by Romain Duris (Pot Luck, Mood Indigo), this
film raises the sensitive subject of the trauma of a First World War
which irremediably led to the Second.

8. C’est la vie ! (Le sens de la fête)

9. Two is a family (Demain tout commence)



Samuel lives the easy life of a bachelor in the south of France.
Until Kristin, one of his former conquests, leaves him in charge of

a father, he chases Kristin in London where he ends up raising Gloria
by himself. Father and daughter will soon be inseparable. Full of

10. Back To Burgundy (Ce qui nous lie)



Learning his father is on his deathbed, Jean returns to his hometown
-a small village in Burgundy he left 10 years before. Reuniting with
his sister Juliette and his brother Jérémie, they have to rebuild
their relationship while running the family business, a large
vineyard. A tribute to cinema and terroir, Cédric Klapisch’s (Pot
Luck) latest film proves that love, just like wine, needs time.

11. Return of the Hero (le retour du Héros)



It is 1809 in France and the great seducer, Captain Neuville (Jean
Dujardin, award-winning actor from The Artist), comes to ask for the
hand of the young Pauline in marriage. But Pauline’s sister,
Elisabeth (Mélanie Laurent, Shosanna in Quentin Tarantino’s
Inglorious Bastards, 2009) proves impervious to Neuville’s charms.
When Neuville is called to the front and Pauline sits anxiously
waiting for news, Elisabeth takes to the pen and, through her valiant
prose, makes him a real hero of war when the reality is decidedly
different. Then Neuville returns for his bride...

12. Just To Be Sure (Ôtez-moi d'un doute)



Erwan’s life takes an unexpected turn when he finds the man who

13. Django



In the year 1943, the brilliant jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt is at
the peak of his art in German-occupied Paris. While his fellow
gypsies are being persecuted throughout Europe, his life takes a turn
for the worse when the Nazi propaganda machine wants to send him on
tour to Berlin. Reda Kateb (Zero Dark Thirty) dazzles us in this
little known part of History and of the life of a musician who
influenced several generations of artists.

14. The Magic Tuche (Les Tuche 3)



The American dream over, the Tuche family comes home to France. Now
the mayor of Bouzolles, Jeff Tuche has a very simple project: that
the train stops in his small village. As things do not go according
to plan, he decided to run for President and wins to everybody’s
astonishment, including his! Since its come-back to the big screen in

15. Polina (Polina, danser sa vie)



Polina is a young Russian ballerina who, upon joining the prestigious
Bolshoi Ballet, attends a contemporary dance performance which
transforms her life. She then decides to leave for Aix-en-Provence to
try a new approach to her art. With this adaptation of the eponymous
graphic novel, the directing couple gives us breathtaking dance
scenes choreographed by the great Angelin Preljocaj himself.
